Finding a new love in my run commute

Valentine’s Day, how cliché.

Today I wanted to share a new found love in something I’ve only recently started doing. Running to work.

The odds were always against me and some still are, but with our house move came a new route into work and inspiration and the motivation to give it a go.

My main limiting factor was that my workplace doesn’t have a shower. It still annoys me but there’s nothing I can do about it, so I am proactive and do what I can – I use my gym membership and shower there near-ish work, then walk the rest of the way.

My new route takes in the Edinburgh canal path and apart from the cyclists, I feel safer and more at one running along here than on the pavement. Yes eventually the path ends but from there I’m halfway and it’s a downhill stretch to my morning destination.

On Monday I packed my kit – another thing you really have to think about, plan and nail – and set off, but I’d forgotten one thing. It’s still Winter in Scotland and it was dark at 7am. Cue finding a newer route, retracing the bus route and trying to avoid the darkness of the canal path. For now. I’m even more excited for Spring now!

My run commute has happened twice so I’m still making it my habit, tweaking and learning. On the first day I packed brown shoes instead of black, but I did remember a vest for yoga after so I didn’t have to sweat it out in a long sleeve in the studio. Yesterday I forgot my hairbrush so I spent a few minutes in front of the mirror detangling my hair with my fingers. At the weekend I plan to buy a little toiletries bag packed with all my essentials so I’m never caught out again.

    I run commute. I have an extra set of stuff and leave it all at work (toiletries, brush, make-up, towels). Suppose you’ll have to carry it with you though if you have a shower at the gym. How about running home in the evening instead? Carry less stuff in your running backpack and shower at home.

    It does require a lot of planning to run to work in the morning. I take in clothes and an extra coat the day before. Can’t wait until it’s light in evenings and I’ll switch to running home.

    My main tip – have lots of extra pants. I forgot mine for the first time ever today! Sweaty ones went back on ‍♀️

      I think running back home might be a good option, I just love running in the morning to start my day! Good tips though, pants everywhere, I agree! So you’re never caught short!

    This is wonderful! I am spoilt with a shower at work but I promise remembering all the bits you need gets easier as it becomes routine. Have you tried a shampoo or shower gel bag from the Body shop to save weight in your pack? Enjoy lovely one xxxx

      Ooh I love the body shop so I’ll definitely pop in and have a look, good shout! Definitely better this week than last so hoping that routine will make it seamless, I love it though.
