With the days so much longer – especially when the sun streams through my window at 5am and wakes me up – it’s nice to make the most of weekday evenings and a mid-week race every so often mixes things up nicely.
Last month, to mark the start of London’s Summer, was the first of a trio of the Wimbledon Trail Series races, organised by the Good Running Guide. On the first Wednesday of every month between May-July they put on a race around the trails of Wimbledon Common starting at 7pm. They’re easily accessible to most on public transport and are the perfect #humpday addition after work, especially when there’s a post-race pub trip planned with club mates.
Last night was round number two with another five miles of a rather wetter route compared to the first outing, but fun all the same. As I was only a few days out of racing a 50km before the first round, I hoped my legs would be better rested this time and turns out, they were! I was almost 4 minutes quicker round the same course so very pleased with my time and our top 3 ladies took the team prize, edging Clapham Chasers off the top spot this time so it’s now all to play for in July!
You can still enter for next months race on July 5th so get it in your diary!
Next week (14th June) are the Parkland Relays organised by local running club Thames Hare and Hounds, again on a Wednesday evening kicking off at 7pm in Richmond Park. Team of 3 ladies or 4 men take on a short and sharp 2.8 mile loop around Pen Ponds and the Jubilee Plantations, and with the added competitive spark that a relay race brings, team spirit is sure to be high! On your marks!
Also perfect for Summer are the Chase the Sun race series by RunThrough – another mid-week series of 5 or 10km races held in various locations around London. From Finsbury Park to Clapham Common these popular races start at 7pm and as their title suggests it’s a race to complete the course before the sun goes down, with a reward of a pretty awesome and unique medal at the finish.
Of course if you’re not racing you can always be training, so make sure you take your run or workout outdoors to make the most of the lighter evenings. My favourite ways to train with friends are still –
Monday: Wild Trail Runners, 7pm Holland Park
Tuesday: Never Stop London, 6.30pm The North Face, Regent Street
Thursday: Fulham Running Club, 6.45pm Nuffield Health, Fulham
